Eco-Friendly Things to Do in Dubai: A Guide for Conscious Travelers

Dubai is not the first city that comes to mind when you think of sustainable travel. But that’s changing faster than most people realise. Alongside the luxury hotels and shopping malls, there’s a quieter Dubai growing — one built around green architecture, protected nature reserves, and a genuine government commitment to reducing the city’s environmental footprint. Here’s where to find it.

1. Explore by E-Bike — Zero Emissions Sightseeing

The most immediate way to travel more sustainably in Dubai is to choose how you move around. Our e-bike tours run entirely on electric power with zero direct emissions. You cover 12–18km of waterfront Dubai — the Marina, JBR, Bluewaters — without contributing a gram of CO₂. And because you’re on a promenade rather than in a car, you’re experiencing the city rather than sitting in it.

It’s also worth noting that e-bike tours have a fraction of the logistical footprint of coach or bus tours — smaller groups, no coach emissions, no air-conditioned vehicles idling at stops.

2. Al Qudra Lakes — Desert Conservation in Action

About 40km south of the Marina, Al Qudra Lakes are a man-made conservation area that has become a genuine wildlife sanctuary in the desert. Over 170 species of birds have been recorded here, including flamingos, falcons, and several species of migratory waterfowl that stop over during seasonal migrations.

The Al Qudra cycle track — 86km of dedicated path — loops through the dunes and past the lakes. It’s one of the most peaceful cycling experiences in the UAE, entirely car-free, and genuinely beautiful at sunrise or sunset when the desert light is at its most dramatic.

3. Dubai Sustainable City — The World’s First Net Zero Community

Dubai Sustainable City, completed in 2015, is one of the most ambitious urban sustainability projects in the world. The 46-hectare development is powered entirely by solar panels, produces zero net carbon, grows food on site through urban farms and permaculture systems, and bans petrol-fuelled vehicles within its walls.

Guided tours of the community are available and offer a genuinely interesting look at what large-scale sustainable urban living looks like in practice — not as a concept, but as an inhabited neighbourhood where thousands of people live and work.

4. Dubai Frame and the Green Spaces of Zabeel Park

Zabeel Park, adjacent to the Dubai Frame, is one of the city’s most expansive green spaces and one of the first parks in the UAE to receive environmental certification. The park runs on renewable energy, uses treated recycled water for irrigation, and has over 300 different species of plants.

The Dubai Frame itself — a 150-metre-tall picture frame-shaped building — incorporates sustainability features throughout its design and construction, and its rooftop glass walkway offers one of the most dramatic aerial perspectives of old versus new Dubai available anywhere.

5. Shop at Ripe Market

Ripe Market is Dubai’s original organic and artisan market, running seasonally in several locations around the city. Local producers bring seasonal fruit and vegetables, organic products, artisan food, and sustainable goods. It’s a good place to meet the community of people in Dubai actively committed to environmental values — and to eat very well.

6. Mangrove Kayaking in Abu Dhabi

A short drive from Dubai, Abu Dhabi’s Eastern Mangroves National Park is a protected coastal ecosystem accessible by kayak. Paddling through the mangrove channels at dawn or dusk — with herons overhead and the Abu Dhabi skyline in the distance — is one of the most serene and memorable natural experiences in the UAE. Several operators run guided kayak tours with minimal environmental impact.

7. Support Local Food and Drink

Dubai has a growing number of restaurants committed to sourcing locally, reducing waste, and operating sustainably. Favourites among environmentally conscious visitors include farm-to-table cafes in Al Quoz, juice bars using UAE-grown produce, and several hotel restaurants that have made public sustainability commitments.

Travelling Consciously in Dubai

Sustainable travel in Dubai doesn’t require compromise. The city’s growing infrastructure of eco-friendly options — from green architecture to zero-emission transport to protected nature reserves — means you can travel with intention and still have an exceptional experience. Starting with an e-bike tour of the Marina is, if we’re honest, a pretty good way to begin.
