What to wear on a Dubai outdoor tour depends almost entirely on one thing: which season you’re visiting. Dubai has two very different climates — a warm, pleasant winter from October to April, and an intense summer from May to September where temperatures regularly exceed 40°C. Get this right and outdoor activities are genuinely comfortable. Get it wrong and even a short walk becomes unpleasant. Here’s what to pack for each season.
October to April: The Good Season
This is Dubai’s tourist season for good reason. Temperatures typically range from 18°C at night to 28°C during the day. Morning and evening outdoor activities are genuinely enjoyable — warm but not hot, with low humidity and often a pleasant breeze off the Gulf.
Clothing
- Lightweight athletic wear — shorts and a breathable t-shirt are ideal for morning and afternoon tours.
- A light layer — early morning and evening tours in December and January can feel genuinely cool, especially near the water. A thin long-sleeve top or light jacket is worth having.
- Closed-toe shoes — trainers or lightweight hiking shoes. Avoid sandals or flip-flops, which are unsafe for cycling.
- Sunglasses — essential year-round. The light reflecting off the water and white buildings is intense even in winter.
Sun Protection
- Sunscreen SPF 30+ — apply before the tour even in cooler months. The UV index in Dubai is high year-round.
- A cap or hat — particularly for morning tours when you may be riding directly into the sun.
May to September: The Hot Season
Summer in Dubai requires planning. Daytime temperatures between June and September regularly reach 42–45°C with high humidity, making outdoor activity genuinely taxing on a conventional bike. This is why our summer tours run specifically in the early morning (6:30–8:00 AM) or after sunset (7:00–9:00 PM) when temperatures drop to the low 30s and conditions are manageable.
Clothing
- Moisture-wicking fabrics only — cotton holds sweat and becomes uncomfortable very quickly. Look for technical athletic fabrics.
- Light colours — white and light grey reflect heat rather than absorbing it.
- Lightweight long sleeves (optional but effective) — a thin UPF-rated long sleeve top can actually keep you cooler than bare skin by blocking direct sunlight.
- Breathable shorts or lightweight trousers — avoid heavy denim or synthetic fabrics that don’t breathe.
- Closed-toe shoes — as above, essential for cycling.
Sun Protection in Summer
- Sunscreen SPF 50+ — even on early morning tours, the sun rises quickly in summer and UV exposure builds fast.
- Full coverage cap or cycling helmet visor — helmets are provided on our tours; bring a cap underneath if you prefer.
- Sunglasses with UV protection — not just for comfort, but to protect your eyes from reflected light off the water and buildings.
What to Bring on the Tour
- Water — we provide water on all tours, but in summer months especially, bring your own additional bottle. Hydration in Dubai heat is not optional.
- A small backpack or handlebar bag — for phone, sunscreen, and any layers you might want to remove mid-tour.
- A fully charged phone — for photos. The Marina in golden hour is worth having space on your camera roll.
- Cash or card for food — if you’d like to stop at a cafe before or after the tour.
What Not to Wear
- Sandals or open-toed shoes — not safe for cycling under any conditions.
- Very loose or flowing clothing — fabric can get caught in bike mechanics.
- Heavy fabrics — jeans, thick sweaters, anything that retains heat.
- Tight formal wear — you’ll be moving. Dress for light physical activity.
Cultural Considerations
Dubai is a relaxed city by UAE standards, particularly in tourist areas like the Marina, JBR, and Bluewaters Island. Shorts and t-shirts are completely acceptable on outdoor tours in these areas. However, if your tour extends into older neighbourhoods or you plan to visit mosques or traditional souks separately, carry a light layer that covers shoulders and knees.
The E-Bike Advantage
One of the underrated benefits of e-bike tours is that you don’t arrive at each viewpoint sweating and red-faced. The pedal-assist means you can dress normally — not in full cycling kit — and still cover significant distances without overheating. What you wear on a conventional cycling tour and what you need on an e-bike tour are genuinely different categories.
